Why was Former PM Manmohan Singh shaking hands with militant Yasin Mallik who murdered more than 25 Kashmiris?

Very good question. But let me ask some counter-questions. Why did Vajpayee Ji shake hands and have a closed-door meeting with General Musharraf, who was the reason for the Kargil war and such huge casualties of our armed forces? Why did Modi Ji visit Pakistan to wish a happy birthday to the Pak PM? Despite China voting against India at the UN every time, Modi Ji had been so close to Xi Jinping. Why did Modi have so many one-to-one private summits with Xi Jinping? I don’t remember Xi Jinping ever doing any India-friendly act.

Dr. Manmohan Singh definitely didn’t do the right thing to shake hands with Yasin Malik who allegedly killed 25 Kashmiris. But how many Indian soldiers were killed by General Musharraf? I mean he didn’t kill personally, but occupying Kargil was his game plan, so he is responsible for all the casualties that the Indian army suffered in Kargil. How much harm Xi Jinping has done to India? Is it OK to shake hands with someone if he is a political leader, no matter how many Indian soldiers his army has killed?

In the Bali G20 meeting Modi Ji was seen shaking hands with Xi Jinping. Footage from the Indonesian presidential secretariat’s official YouTube channel showed Modi seated and conversing with US secretary of state Antony Blinken when Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan stopped nearby to speak with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Modi was seen getting up from his seat and shaking hands with Xi, who smiled. Modi, flanked by an interpreter, then spoke to Xi for a few minutes.

BJP in Assam has been in alliance with BPF (Bodoland People's Front) between 2016 to 2021 in BJP’s first term in Assam. The gentleman in the above image is Hagrama Mohilary, the leader of BPF. BPF is a party created by Ex. NDFB cadres.

At a function organized in February 2020, the Bodoland Territorial Council chief Hagrama Mohilary requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that all criminal cases against the cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) are withdrawn. Mr. Mohilary, who was himself a militant till 2003, made the request at an official function held in Assam to celebrate the signing of the Bodo Accord.PM Modi, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Governor Jagdish Mukhi were present at the program

Let me tell you a little more about NDFB. NBFB cadres have a violent past taking hundreds of innocent lives in indiscriminate firing and numerous bomb blasts. And our PM, Modi Ji found it honorable hobnobbing with him. Mr. Mohilary, who was himself a militant till 2003

NDFB’s Ranjan Daimary faction had carried out serial bomb blasts across Assam on October 30, 2008, that claimed 88 lives and left more than 500 injured.

Daimary, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the blasts, was released on interim bail on January 25 to participate in the Bodo peace talks with the Centre.

The NDFB(S), another dreaded faction, had killed 43 people, mostly from the minority community, in Baksa and Kokrajhar districts in May 2014.

In more attacks, the outfit killed at least 81 people, including 76 adivasis, in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang districts in December that year.

Politics is a matter of convenience. Somewhere it is a political compulsion, somewhere it is a party compulsion. Attacking MMS and Congress is the favorite time pass of BJP and its supporters. Otherwise, can you think that Modi Ji would send relief material to the Taliban government? Would he not shake hands with the Taliban leaders if there comes an occasion where they would share the dias? Don’t you think that he must have spoken to the Taliban leaders before sending those relief materials? Interestingly the relief materials were sent through Pakistan with protection from the Pakistan government. If a strong leader like Modi Ji had to shake hands with a militant leader whose organization was responsible for hundreds of deaths - civilian as well as defense personnel, don’t you think it is quite possible for MMS to shake hands with Malik?

Edit:

A few people have commented that I have not answered the main question. that why was Former PM Manmohan Singh shook hands with militant Yasin Mallik who murdered more than 25 Kashmiris. The main question is fallacious with malfide intention. The actual purpose of the question was not to ask the reason for the meeting but to highlight that MMS met a militant leader. So the answer would have been redundant. But unfortunately, there are people who are either naïve or just want to take a dig at me. So I thought that it would be necessary to answer this question to satisfy the queries.

First of all PM, HM, or another senior office bearer of the government meeting a rebel leader is nothing unusual, uncommon wrong, or illegal.

In 2015, renewed negotiations had begun between the NSCN-IM and the Modi government. Since then, seven other Naga armed outfits, under the banner of Naga National Political Groups, have joined the talks.

The person sitting right to Modi is NSCN (I-M) general secretary Th. Muivah, the top leader of the group. NSCN has two groups - NSCN (K) & NSCN (IM). NSCN(IM) is the bigger group. NSCN has been fighting for independence from India since 1960 or even earlier. NSCN has been the most dreaded militant group, known for its extremely effective guerrilla warfare and ambush capabilities. For decades NSCN has been a headache for the defense forces. Posting in Nagaland was considered to be a frightful experience for the defense forces and the paramilitary forces as they could be ambushed from any angle or from any direction. Trust me in jungle warfare there is hardly any match to the NSCN. The casualties they inflicted on our defense forces are practically uncountable. Making peace with them was the only way to build lasting peace in the region. And efforts have been going on for so many decades. The meeting above chaired by Modi Ji was one such meeting attended by Mr. Muivah. Mr. Muivah is essentially a militant leader. And Modi Ji met an effective and current militant leader, not an ex. militant leader.

So we have seen Modi Ji meet and sit with both former and current militant leaders. Nothing wrong. The meeting with rebel leaders like Muivah is essential to build up lasting peace which couldn’t have been possible fighting with them. Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to ULFA C&C Paresh Barua to come to the negotiation table. In such cases, you don’t count who killed how many. You are essentially meeting and negotiating with someone who is possibly responsible for killing hundreds or maybe thousands. Neither NSCN nor ULFA could be eliminated despite the best efforts by the governments using forces. People would be aware that the army has been given special power in the NE region through the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). A provision that was not even given to the army even in J&K. Modi Ji meeting NSCN leader was no conspiracy against the nation. It was in the interest of the nation.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s meeting with Yasin Malik in a similar meeting to end militancy and build lasting peace in the Kashmir valley. Yasin Malik represented all party Hurriyat. Strangely nobody ever asked any question to Modi Ji why he met the militant leaders. That is where my problem. Use the same lenses for everybody.

I believe people have to be looked at under the same scanner. These are targeted questions, so I had to bring the other PM into the picture to compare apple to apple. In isolation, you can not say MMS was right or wrong. Talking to insurgents or rebel group leaders is nothing new. These questions are designed to portray MMS in a bad light. It's a political conspiracy against Congress.
