I do not think this question has any significance in today's life. Who lives a simpler life is not at all an important criterion to judge somebody or to judge their competency, capability, leadership, or their success and failure. Lifestyle or dress simply has no role to play. These are part of दुकानदारी (Dukanadari). The English meaning of Dukaandaarii is - shop-keeping · assertion, persuasion, flattery · bargaining, etc. For example, Kejriwal claims to be an “Aam AAdmi”, which means an ordinary person45. But the same Kejriwal renovates his official bungalow spending whopping 45 crores. Which is contradictory to the image he has built.
He may have an explanation that this is the official residence of Delhi CM, it should be as per decorum of the office, no matter how he likes to stay. That at heart he is the same common-ordinary person. So there is no way to ascertain whether he is actually living a simple life or not. Without knowing that no comparison can be made.
Modi Ji claims himself to be a “Fakir”. But he lives the most luxurious life from head to toe. The best of the Bollywood dress designers working for him, you wouldn’t see him in the same attire for 2nd time, his pen, watch, shoes, and sunglasses are all imported. He flies in the world’s most luxurious aircraft. His expensive diamond facial, imported mushroom diet. Everything is a little extraordinary. I do not know how could he claim to be a Fakir.
But these are important for getting g public sympathy and vote. if simply putting a “YogI” prefix, not using your original name, or putting up “Yogi Adityanath” name, wearing saffron - can help you to be an MP repeatedly as well as a CM or make you a possible contender for PM’s chair, why would you not do all these? If these help me to become a CM, I wouldn’t mind wearing saffron throughout the day and 365 days a year.
Going south, wearing the white dhoti is the traditional dress in their typical style. Most big shots were dhoti there on every occasion. They take pride in wearing dhoti. There is no question of simplicity. Rahul is comfortable with cotton plants and T-shirts. And it goes well with his image. You can call it simplicity, I won’t mind. But it need not be.
However, this attire, external appearance, or show doesn’t impress me. Rahul & Akhilesh that way more normal. They don’t try to impress the public with their dress. The other three want to impress people through their attire, image of Fakir, Aam Aadmi, Yogi, etc. I do not think Akhilesh lives a very simple life. But both Rahul and Akhilesh do not try to deceive people with any prefix or through their attire.
One person I am sure of living a very simple life is Mamata Banerjee. The other person that impresses me is Naveen Patnaik.
