Interesting decision by the BCCI. Irrespective of market sentiment, or the pandemic, the Indian cricket board’s wealth is growing. And, now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI’s) net worth is a colossal Rs.18,011.84 crore. Though BCCI is still not the richest sports body in the world. The No-1 slot goes to FIFA. But for the richest cricket board paying women cricketers at par with their men counterparts is not at all an issue financially. Now the matter could be looked into from multiple angles. The women cricketers always felt that they were not being looked after properly by the BCCI in terms of monetary rewards/match fees as well as sponsorship earnings. Apart from the match fees they hardly earn anything. Despite giving their best they are very poorly paid. But then their revenue contribution could never match to that of their male counterpart.
Then the question comes why did BCCI decide to announce equal match fees for men and women cricketers? Of course, money is never an issue for BCCI. But does it mean that BCCI has taken this call with a big heart? Could be. However, I feel this decision has a futuristic significance and mission. Women’s cricket is yet to become a money-spinning avenue. But there is huge potential to develop this platform to engage on a truly professional level. Better payment to the players would attract a lot of raw talent, more girls would be encouraged to seriously consider cricket as a career option. Only BCCI has the money muscle to develop and take women’s cricket to the next level where it could also become a money-spinning platform for BCCI apart from offering the players a great rewarding sporting career. I think BCCI has some master plan designed.
