What is more important is that people should wisely vote in the next six phases and wait for the result day. I think it would be wrong to make any story or assumption at this stage. So many people have so many stories to tell.
People had voted for the NDA and for Viksit Bharat, declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, a day after the first phase of general elections was held across the country. The PM was speaking in a rally in Chikkaballapur on his fourth visit to Karnataka since the announcement of the poll schedule, hoping to swing votes in six of the 14 constituencies going to the polls in a week. “The message is clear, from Chikkaballapur and Kolar is clear, Phir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkar,” he said.
I do not know how come PM Modi is so sure that people have voted for NDA. Does he get beforehand confirmation of what vote has gone to the EVM? Is it possible that some kind of automated messages are being sent to BJP HQ from the EVMs about the vote counts? Then he again said, “The message is clear, from Chikkaballapur and Kolar is clear, Phir Ek Baar, Modi Sarkar,”. I do not understand who gave him the message and what the message “Chikkaballapur and Kolar is clear” means. Has somebody sent him some coded message that Chikkaballapur and Kolar have been taken care of? People are free to assume how two constituencies could be clear in advance and who could have conveyed such a message to the PM. And the fact is that PM Modi is confident about the message. It must have come from some reliable source.
Anyway, your question is - Why is voter turnout very low in the 1st phase of the Lok Sabha polls? Is it an indication that India Alliance will win? And possibly you are hopeful that low voter turnout could be an indication that the INDI Alliance will win. But see, already Modi is sure that people have voted for NDA. Modi Ji must be having better and credible source of information than your assumption. If I go with your gut feelings, the Bhakts will immediately comment “Be ready to eat back your words” or “ Or keep your Burnol supply ready” But if I say that possibly Modi is right then the Bhakts will comment “ The poor fellow has already accepted defeat so early”
So the safe answer is - Wait for 4th June. Don’t be in a hurry. However, I believe that low voter turnout is bad for democracy. There is a little confusion about the first phase of voter turnout figures. Somewhere it is mentioned as 62% and elsewhere it is said to be 64%. Even if we consider it to be at 64%, it is considerably lower than the first phase voter turnout in 2019. In the first phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the voter turnout was 69.43. Otherwise, also it is lower than the overall voter turnout of 67.40% in 2019. So this year this is a major drop.
And this was the biggest phase among all the seven phases with 102 going for poll. As such it will be difficult to make it up. In crucial states like Bihar, the voting percentage was very low 47.49%. This is very disturbing if more than 50% of registered voters do not take part in exercising their voting rights. This indifference of voters is of a big concern. Possibly people have lost their faith in the democratic process. This is another way of having confirmation that our democracy is degraded. Overall I see a lackluster atmosphere which possibly I am seeing after many seasons. Who wins and who loses is a secondary matter. But people losing faith in the democratic process is a big concern.
