Amit Shah or Yogi Adityanath - who is ahead in the race to succeed Narendra Modi as PM?

I feel Amit Shah is far ahead of Jogi. I do not know whether Yogi has it in him or not. He may be having, but he has not displayed. Every time Yogi spoke at election rallies outside UP, his lecture was limited to Hindutva and “Jai Sri Ram” or attacking the other sides -Mamata or Kejriwal, Congress, RJD, etc. Basically, his speeches oscillate around hate politics, Pakistan, Imran, etc.

It's not that Amit Shah is an exception, however, I believe he has seen national politics much more closely. And he has already seen the pitfalls of his failure as well as Modi’s failure closely. Which would make him wiser should he get the opportunity. This is only hope, no guarantee or assurance. While in the case of Yogi, he doesn’t even realize what he is projecting. When we speak of the PM chair, it's not about Hindutva or saffronisation. We are not going to elect a religious leader, people would elect a nation head. Why does Yogi think that chanting “Jai Sri Ram” or “ Vande Mataram”, or hating Pakistan would solve all problems of India? His arrogance will not work. As a nation head, he can not talk of encounters or encourage extrajudicial killing. He can not give orders to shoot the protesters or put everybody in jail.

Generally speaking, Yogi is intelligent, however, I feel he is on the wrong bus. He is busy appeasing the crude hardliners. This could be an essential element of his overall appeal and rise in the party hierarchy in UP. However, what brought him here wouldn’t take him there. Possibly he needs to know and understand the difference between CM & PM as well as UP and India. He is not ready yet. He is rude and crude as of now. However, his raw energy could be useful if he channelizes it in the right direction.

The difference is like that between Shoaib Akhtar and Glenn McGrath. Shoaib Akhtar is known for his brutal fast bowing. He bowled his fastest at 161.3 km/h on 22nd February 2003. Glenn McGrath wasn't the quickest or the canniest ever. But he was devastating for the opposite side, scalping a staggering tally of 563 Test wickets to end up statistically, if not otherwise, as the greatest-ever fast bowler. McGrath's selling point was his CNC machine-like precision, tidy lines, and lengths hovering around off stump. His fastest was 92mph (148kph) during the 1999 World Cup, though he could be quicker when he first played internationally.

Whereas Shoaib Akhtar though was lethal with his speed, got burnt out quickly and could not take him to that level. Despite having such neck-breaking speed, he could never reach the level of his compatriots Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Imran Khan. Possibly Shoaib's speed was his greatest asset and might have given huge success in domestic cricket where fellow batsmen couldn’t negotiate his speed. But international cricket is a different ball game, their efficacy matters. Kapil Dev mostly bowled at around 130 KM, but he was effective. Brutal strength and speed are not enough. Shoaib Akhtar’s raw energy couldn’t take him far. No doubt he was always in the limelight.

Yogi’s raw energy is also in the same line. He gets all the attention for his aggressive stands. Hardliners are his fans. But to survive long and to be successful in national politics aggression alone wouldn't help much unless laced with political acumen. I am yet to see glimpses of it in Yogi. He is definitely not prepared and fit for the chair of PM in his current avatar. He would be a disaster for India as PM.

What Yogi is projecting is saffron cladding and his aggressive character. It is possible he may have other elements of leadership. But we would see whatever he shows or whatever he gives prominence.

It's like the physical beauty and sex appeal, that is required to get noticed in the film industry. But survival and success purely depend on acting talent and blending your appeal. Wearing saffron or being aggressive is no difficult task because this pertains to the external appearance. Success in national politics would purely depend on political acumen. Here I find Amit Shah miles ahead of Yogi. A section argues that Yogi has a clean image, but that doesn’t replace political jurisprudence.

Disclaimer - This article is purely to draw a comparison between Amit Shah and Yogi. I am not a BJP supporter and in no way endorse Amit Shah to be a PM candidate as I strongly oppose BJP’s economic and many other policies.
